ROGER MCGUINN - catch up review

GIG: Roger McGuinn
DATE: Saturday 1st November 2014
VENUE: The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes
COST: £38.50
OUR VERDICT: Jangle On

As the lights went down, a tall man dressed in black came onto the stage, playing his acoustic guitar and singing “My Back Pages”. a living legend, Roger McGuinn was in the house!

We were treated to a delightful set, interspersed with a bit of chat. Roger is the epitome of the troubadour. He doesn't need to do these gigs if he doesn't want to. But he and his wife travel the world lightly...a couple of guitars and a couple of suitcases, bringing us a musical history lesson on the way.

His jangling 12 string guitar was the background to tales about Bob Dylan, Tom Petty (who was obviously influenced by Roger) and The Beatles.

Lots of Byrds songs, of course, including the Beeb's favourite "Chesnut Mare." Roger is doing this tour with no album to promote. What he does promote is the classic American folk song. He's keeping the traditional songs alive by recording one a month for his website.

A memorable night in the company of a genuine, A list, 60's innovator.
